Cobra lilies are a type of pitcher plant that survive in nutrient poor peaty bogs. The pitcher-like structure is used to trap small insects which provide nitrogen for these plants. I photographed this specimen at a plant preserve in Oregon. Because of their restricted habitat requirements, this species is protected from collecting.
