House finches were originally found in the American Southwest and were intentionally released by cage bid fanciers in the 1940's. Although colorful and common around human dwellings, they have displaced purple finches in the Northern United States and Canada. This male is exhibiting the streaked sides and strawberry red coloration of its breeding plumage.
Jim Zablotny is a natural historian, entomologist, and nature photographer from Fenton, Michigan. His present work emphasizes color, detail, and bold composition of natural subjects. His artistic endeavors included scientific illustration, and presently nature photography with subjects ranging from macro photographs of insects and wildflowers, to birds, reptiles,amphibians, and mammals.
