Artist's Description

The eastern population of the monarch butterfly is in decline and fewer butterflies make it to their overwintering grounds in Mexico. I found this lone larva feeding on the leaves of a seedling of Asclepias syriaca, the common milkweed. Of hundreds of milkweeds around our pond, this was the only one that I could find. Hopefully, this one makes it to adulthood and migrates successfully.
