I travelled up to the Northern section of the lower peninsula today and found a number of pink lady's slipper orchids in bloom. Also known as moccasin flower, these orchids are common in Northern bogs and coniferous forests where the soil is more acidic. I decided to do a high key image because it shows the intricate structure of the flower. I chose this flower because it was darker and recently opened than the others in the population.
Jim Zablotny is a natural historian, entomologist, and nature photographer from Fenton, Michigan. His present work emphasizes color, detail, and bold composition of natural subjects.
