The brilliant color of a hummingbird's plumage is due to the microscopic structure of the feathers. The lighting has to be near perfect to get the throat colors to reveal the red iridescence. On this rainy afternoon, hummingbirds were perched near the feeders and perched within range for a photo.
Jim Zablotny is a natural historian, entomologist, and nature photographer from Fenton, Michigan. His present work emphasizes color, detail, and bold composition of natural subjects.
