Artist's Description
The species concept in the genus Cypripedium is difficult to define because naturally occurring hybrids are commonly encountered in nature. The ivory pouch and dark brown sepals reveal that this is a hybrid between Cypripedium candidum and Cypripedium parviflorum var. makasin. The differences in flower morphology are subtle and pollinators do not discriminate between the two parent species when in flower in the same area.
