Waking up early and heading out on a cold morning was rewarding. I found this sleeping red-spotted purple butterfly carefully balanced on a grass seed head. This butterfly lost a piece of its fore-wing from an encounter with a hungry bird.

Jim Zablotny is a natural historian, entomologist, and nature photographer from Fenton, Michigan. His present work emphasizes color, detail, and bold composition of natural subjects.
